Undergraduate Academic Programs

 

AUA offers four year undergraduate degrees in Business, English & Communications, Politics & Governance, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering Sciences, Environmental & Sustainability Sciences, and 30 months in NursingAll programs are offered as part of a liberal arts education to ensure that graduates are specialists and well-rounded individuals who can think critically and creatively, learn independently, understand different thought processes, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively with people from different cultures and disciplines.

 


BA in Business 
The BA in Business (BAB) is a four year program that provides students with a solid foundation for accounting, business management, marketing, and economics. Students develop analytical capabilities, critical thinking, and decision-making skills to address complex real-world business problems. Throughout their four years, students develop professional curiosity, self-reliance, and strong business acumen, aside from the formal academic training they receive. Graduates are well equipped for positions in fields such as accounting, sales, marketing, economics, finance, international business, banking, and general management. The BA in Business also provides a solid foundation for entrepreneurship and/or for pursuing further studies in the graduate programs at AUA, or elsewhere.

The program offers a wide range of courses, both required and elective, that enable students to specialize in one of four tracks:

BA in English and Communications
The BA in English and Communications is a four year program that provides students with a strong foundation in English literature and language along with a critical understanding of contemporary media and literary/cultural theory, while developing communication skills that can be applied in a range of contexts. Graduates are well equipped for positions in journalism, publishing, mass media, translation, interpretation, public relations, advertising, and corporate communications. They will also be well prepared to pursue further graduate studies in literary studies, cultural studies, creative writing, film studies, education, communications, translation, and law.

BA in Politics and Governance
The four-year undergraduate BA in Politics and Governance will provide students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills needed to understand the relationship between politics, society, and governance. The program focuses on decision-making and conflict resolution at the local, national, and international levels, and how democracy, citizenship, rule of law and human rights are interconnected. Though situated in the Armenian context, the program takes a global view and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to contextualize and address political and societal challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

BS in Computer Science
The BS in Computer Science is a four year program designed to provide an integrated and interdisciplinary undergraduate degree that applies the theoretical rigor of mathematics and computational methods to real-life problems. Graduates will be well positioned to obtain jobs in industries such as mobile and software development, mathematical modeling, data science, financial analysis, game development, biotechnology, mobile development, IT startups, and security management and cryptography. They will also be equipped to pursue further studies in computer science, applied mathematics, big data engineering, business administration, bioinformatics and engineering science at AUA or other graduate schools worldwide.

Courses cover a range of topics from pure theory to hands-on applications including mechanics, artificial intelligence, dynamical systems, electromagnetism, cryptography, and computer graphics. Elective courses allow students to pursue one of the two offered tracks, or design their own program of specialized study:

BS in Data Science

The four-year BS in Data Science is an interdisciplinary degree combining fundamentals of statistical modeling, machine learning, and computational sciences. Students develop skills across several disciplines, acquiring the knowledge and tools to manage massive amounts of data emerging from new realms in business, engineering, financial forecasting, software and vehicles development, biotechnology, as well as any other domain with big data. The program prepares graduates that are well-prepared for employment in a wide range of sectors including data mining, technical marketing and business analytics, business administration, applied mathematics, bioinformatics and pharmaceutical statistical research, as well as advanced studies in a number of academic disciplines such as computer science, engineering, environmental science, and bioscience.

Required core courses cover a range of topics from theoretical math and in-depth statistical methods, to computer programming and hands-on practical applications, including data visualization, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Students will have the opportunity to choose a set of courses concentrating in one of two domains of specialized study to match their interests and advance their careers:

BS in Engineering Sciences
The BS in Engineering Sciences is a four year multi-disciplinary program designed for students who are interested in a broad-based general engineering degree. The program provides a multidisciplinary degree that fuses core concepts from traditional engineering disciplines, empowering graduates to address challenges common to complex and integrated technological systems. The program explores synergies among science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in enabling students to understand a multitude of complex systems and address the challenges of Armenia, the region, and the world.

The BS in Engineering Sciences program accentuates innovation and creativity, fostering an entrepreneurial disposition in graduates. The program also underscores effective oral and written communication skills to help graduates convey ideas from the discipline to become change-agents and leaders. Graduates may pursue employment in a wide range of sectors requiring analytical and quantitative skills as well as advanced studies in a wide variety of academic disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical and systems engineering, computer science and robotics.

BS in Environmental and Sustainability Sciences 

The four-year undergraduate Bachelors of Science (BS) program in Environmental and Sustainability Science (ESS) is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and address sustainability challenges facing the natural and human-made environments. The program will enable students to analyze human impacts on the planet’s climate system, biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, water resources, land systems, and more. In addition, it will enable students to focus on sustainability of urban environments, including urban alignment with nature, mobility and energy solutions, air quality, use and disposal of water, waste and circular economy, disaster resilience, and more. The program will equip students with knowledge and tools to work in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural settings to begin addressing these challenges at the local, national, cross-border, and global levels.

BS in Nursing
The AUA Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) bridging program is designed for nurses who have a diploma in nursing or midwifery and seek to advance into higher education. The BSN program requires the completion of 75 credits at AUA and typically takes up to 3 years. Our nurse graduates will be able to function independently, professionally, and competently and will employ evidence-based practice, integrate informatics and technology in practice, strengthen academic-practice partnerships, and advocate for career-long learning.

General Education
An AUA undergraduate degree consists of two components: the Major requirements and the General Education requirements. While the Major provides students depth, specialization, and career preparation, General Education gives breadth and a foundation of general knowledge, and skills for life. The AUA undergraduate degree is carefully designed to assure that graduates are ready for life-long learning, whether in the classroom, in their profession, or on their own. Minors
An undergraduate minor at AUA is a set of thematically related courses intended to broaden and complement a student’s learning and experience. Minors are optional. Currently, AUA offers the following minors:

Environmental Studies
The Environmental Studies minor will offer students practical tools and approaches for linking environmentally sustainable and equitable solutions to various fields of study and professional endeavors. Visit here for more information.

The AUA’s Gender Studies minor aims to provide students with a transdisciplinary program to explore the meaning of gender and how gender intersects with ability, age, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and cultural practices. Visit here for further information.

Genocide Studies and Human Rights
This minor aims to develop conscientious, socially-responsible, engaged citizens by providing students with the opportunity to explore the causes, conditions and consequences of genocide and to recognize human rights as a means to promote peace and justice. Visit here for additional information

Philosophy
The Philosophy Minor will equip students with the ability to systematically, rigorously, and independently think about fundamental aspects of reality, nature and limits of human understanding as well as human values and principles of right action. For additional information, visit here.

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics
This minor will complement a student’s studies with an understanding of how philosophy, politics, and economics can be best utilized to inform policy decisions and shape solutions. The Minor will prepare students for a variety of careers in public service, law, business and development, as well as further studies in philosophy or the social sciences. More information is available here.
